The duration of reverberation is the main acoustic parameter of closed space. It is quite easily measurable and it should fall within the range of 0.2 to 0.5 seconds. A space that is overly damped feels oppressive. Conversely, in a space with no damping at all, one can hear considerable echo, for example the unpleasant reverberation sound of a teaspoon clink. Reverberation time can be regulated by changing the amount of acoustically absorptive materials, such as thick curtains, carpets, fabric upholstered sofas, etc.

Hybrid Diffuser in a Room

Compared to other acoustic solutions, a hybrid diffuser diffuses sound waves in one plane and absorbs them in the other. The patterns are optimised in such a way that enough acoustic energy is always kept in the room. Also, the ratio of absorption to diffusion can be to some extent controlled using variations of the basic pattern. On top of that, the diffuser is adapted to natural properties of a room: it suppresses unwanted standing waves thanks to differences in the density of the pattern. A well chosen hybrid diffuser can therefore substitute for a combination of different acoustic solutions that one would otherwise have to combine.

Custom Diffusers for Demanding Audiophiles

The size and volume of the listening space is directly related to the optimal size of the diffuser. In larger spaces, an appropriately sized diffuser will contribute significantly to the improvement of acoustic conditions. The diffuser can also be stained in any shade desired as long as it is darker than the default natural treatment shade. In lighter versions (for example white), the oak wood segments layer is replaced by a quality plastic layer (the frame stays oak wood).

Using this acoustic diffuser has a similar diffusing effect on the sound as sandblasted milk glass does when placed in front of a light cone. Milk glass evenly disperses, or diffuses the light beams. The exact same effect of evenly and regularly dispersing sound is achievable with an acoustic diffuser.

Acoustic Diffuser – Theory, History

The formula for the calculation of the diffuser shape is based on quadratic differences of sequences from the elementary number theory, as described by mathematicians A. M. Legrand (1752–1833) and C. F. Gauss (1777–1857). The 2D-QRD quadratic diffuser has excellent efficiency, its behaviour can be calculated and it works in both horizontal and vertical planes.

The main advantage rests in filling the listening space with sound without unwanted linear reflections from flat surfaces. The diffuser should ideally be placed between the speakers in such a way that its centre point matches the centre point of the wall height.

Upon customer’s request, an inverse diffuser can be made. The inverse one is placed behind the listening spot so that the two are directly opposite each other. The effect of diffusing unwanted reflections then multiplies.

The IQ I features a rigid yet lightweight body made from Pocan, which is equipped with integral threaded inserts for easy installation in the tonearm headshell. This mounting system greatly improves the mechanical coupling between the cartridge body and the headshell compared to the traditional nut & bolt fixing.

The internal coils are made from extremely fine copper wire, and the cantilever is formed from a specific grade of aluminum tube. You may also notice that the suspension is stiffer than what is usually seen in Moving Magnet cartridges of this type.

The stylus is a Gyger Type I, and the complete assembly is removable, making replacement or upgrade a straightforward and cost-effective process. In fact, all of the IQ stylus assemblies are interchangeable, meaning that you could start with an IQ-I and eventually replace the stylus assembly with the vastly superior version used in the IQ-III. It has been designed to be used with a Moving Magnet-compatible phono stage with an input impedance of 47K Ohms.

The total capacitance in parallel (including arm lead and amplifier capacitance) should not exceed 200pF. If other values of load resistance and capacitance are used, the frequency response of the cartridge may deviate from the specified values.

The AN-S1 is a passive device, designed to convert the mainly current output of your Moving Coil cartridge (MC) to a higher voltage, low-current signal of sufficient strength to allow a Moving Magnet (MM) phono stage to amplify it to a suitable level.

The internal transformers used in the AN-S1 are manufactured by Audio Note (UK) exclusively, use the very best core materials and winding technology available at the price, and are housed in Mumetal screening canisters to minimise noise and interference.

The AN-S1 can be supplied in two versions; the AN-S1/L (low-impedance) and the AN-S1/H (high-impedance). The ‘L’ version has a switchable input impedance of 3 Ohms and 12 Ohms; the ‘H’ version, 15 Ohms and 60 Ohms.

The 3 Ohm input of the ‘L’ version has been primarily designed to partner the Audio Note IO Moving Coil cartridges, and the 12 Ohm input is intended to be used with cartridges with an internal impedance of around 3 to 4 Ohms.  

The 15 Ohm input of the ‘H’ version is designed to partner cartridges with an internal impedance of around 4 to 5 Ohms; the 60 Ohm input is designed for cartridges with internal impedance in the region of 15 to 20 Ohms.

It is possible to use our transformers with cartridges that have greater internal impedance, or values that are outside the preferred ranges of the switchable inputs, however, it is important to realize that an input impedance in the region of three to four times the internal impedance of your cartridge will usually provide the best results.

When we decided to develop a new range of budget to mid priced tonearms to replace our long lived and loved ARM-One, Two and Three, we obviously had high hopes and expectations for the new design. We are extremely pleased to announce that the new Version II models have exceeded even our high standards. Ladies and Gentlemen, we give you the Audio Note (UK) ARM-Three/II.

Completely redesigned

​We needed an arm that could be accommodated by not only our own range of turntables, but also by the many designs that were cut for the classic single hole  'Rega' mounting that has dominated the industry for so many years. Yet at the same time, we needed something that would truly push the boundaries of performance, design and quality, not only from a build perspective but also from the vitally important sound quality perspective also. This would require a complete rethink of many of the design criteria, and a level of engineering precision and quality that is rarely seen in the world of HiFi.

Precision Engineering

​All of the new arms are manufactured in a state of the art machining facility located in Austria. We don't use parts manufactured by any other company for our new arms; every single piece is custom designed and manufactured by us and for us. This was the only way we could guarantee to get the results we were aiming for. Many people thought we were crazy to contemplate such an undertaking, especially considering the relatively modest prices we wanted to offer the new arms for, but such things have never worried us in the past, so why should they now! It took us over a year of painstaking prototyping, testing, redesigning and re-prototyping to finalise the design... and the results truly astonishing.

Tapered Armtube

​The new arms all share the same construction, based around an armtube that is machined from a single billet of high-grade aluminium. It is tapered both internally and externally, which reduces overall mass and also increases stiffness. The structural rigidity of this design allows the new arms to work with almost any design of cartridge, regardless of weight or compliance. From the lightest tracking moving magnet right up to our own IO models, the new arms allow the cartridge to track superbly, minimising noise and maximising music.

​Bias adjustment is achieved via the classic 'falling weight' method. We found this to be by far the most easy to adjust and reliable method of bias adjustment.

The vertical and horizontal bearings are not the usual 'ball racer' type. Instead we use a rarely seen 'captured unipivot' arrangement,  which provides significantly superior performance to any conventional arrangement.

As discussed above, we chose to stay with the mounting system used on our earlier generation of arms. But for the new models, we also introduced a method of adjusting the arm height via a threaded collar and locking nut, allowing the stylus rake angle to be precisely adjusted.

Copper inside and out

​The Arm One/II uses our own high purity copper wire inside the armtube, and our own AN-A cable from the arm base to the phono plugs.

Audio Note™ turntables are all designed and built according to a core set of four fundamental insights into what delivers musicality. We have settled on these design principles after many years of experimentation and experience. They can be found on every Audio Note™ turntable from the TT-One right through to the TT Three Reference, in which they achieve their ultimate expression.

Component quality and materials

• A low-mass platter absorbs much less energy from the cartridge in the groove of the record without deadening the sound.
• A vibration-free high-torque AC drive system delivers constant platter speed even when the grooves contain strong modulations.
  The transmission of vibration in our turntables and arms is managed through the use of materials with different resonances and mass so that energy is led away from the cartridge, where it does harm to the sound.
• It has a high-quality aluminum sub-chassis with optimized three-point suspension geometry.
• A high torque  AC motors delivers the torque to the low-mass acrylic platter.
• The robust and long-life bearing features a sintered and polished shaft in a brass tube with a hardened thrust plate and a precision-ground steel ball.
• A suspended chassis attenuates vibration energy from the speakers and the room to deliver purity of reproduction.

Tonearm Choice

The TT-One is built to give an even more generous measure of musical enjoyment, particularly when paired with an Audio Note™ arm to create a combination able to punch well above its price point.

Power Supply

The TT-One offers exceptional performance in standard form, but even this can be improved upon with the addition of the dedicated External power supply.

As the turntable uses (much better sounding) AC motors, the external power supply is a complete AC regenerator, offering the best performance of the turntable independent of the quality of the AC from the wall socket. Next to this, the power supply enables switching from 33 to 45 rpm without changing the pulley.

It is tapered both internally and externally, which reduces overall mass and also increases stiffness. The structural rigidity of this design allows the new arms to work with almost any design of cartridge, regardless of weight or compliance. From the lightest tracking moving magnet right up to our own IO models, the new arms allow the cartridge to track superbly, minimising noise and maximising music.

​Bias adjustment is achieved via the classic 'falling weight' method. We found this to be by far the most easy to adjust and reliable method of bias adjustment.

The vertical and horizontal bearings are not the usual 'ball racer' type. Instead we use a rarely seen 'captured unipivot' arrangement,  which provides significantly superior performance to any conventional arrangement.

As discussed above, we chose to stay with the mounting system used on our earlier generation of arms. But for the new models, we also introduced a method of adjusting the arm height via a threaded collar and locking nut, allowing the stylus rake angle to be precisely adjusted.

Silver inside and out

​The Arm Two/II uses our own high purity Silver Litz wire inside the armtube, and our own AN-V silver cable from the arm base to the phono plugs.

The IQ III features a rigid yet lightweight body made from Pocon, which is equipped with integral threaded inserts for easy installation in the tonearm head-shell. This mounting system greatly improves mechanical coupling between the cartridge body and head-shell in comparison to the traditional nut & bolt fixing.

The internal coils are made from extremely fine copper wire, and the IQ III uses the same cantilever material and diamond found in the legendary Audio Note IO I moving coil cartridge. Made from titanium tube rather than aluminium, the cantilever is unique, and in combination with the Audio Note Type 1 stylus, offers a level of performance that was often though impossible to achieve with a Moving Magnet design.

The complete stylus assembly is removable, making replacement or upgrade a very simple and cost effective process. In fact, all of the IQ stylus assemblies are interchangeable, meaning that you could start with an IQ-I, and eventually replace the stylus assembly with the vastly superior version used in the IQ-III.

It has been designed to be used with a Moving Magnet compatible phono stage, with an input impedance of 47K Ohms. Total capacitance in parallel (including arm lead and amplifier capacitance) should not exceed 200pF. If other values of load resistance and capacitance are used, the frequency response of the cartridge may depart from the specified values.

Power Supply

The TT-Two offers exceptional performance in standard form, but even this can be improved upon with the addition of the dedicated External power supply.

As the turntable uses (much better sounding) AC motors, the external power supply is a complete AC regenerator, offering the best performance of the turntable independent of the quality of the AC from the wall socket. Next to this, the power supply enables switching from 33 to 45 rpm without changing the pulley.

When we decided to develop a new range of budget to mid priced tonearms to replace our long lived and loved ARM-One, Two and Three,  we obviously had high hopes and expectations for the new design. We are extremely pleased to announce that the new Version II models have exceeded even our high standards. Ladies and Gentlemen, we give you the Audio Note (UK) ARM-Three/II.

Completely redesigned

​We needed an arm that could be accommodated by not only our own range of turntables, but also by the many designs that were cut for the classic single hole  'Rega' mounting that has dominated the industry for so many years. Yet at the same time, we needed something that would truly push the boundaries of performance, design and quality, not only from a build perspective but also from the vitally important sound quality perspective also. This would require a complete rethink of many of the design criteria, and a level of engineering precision and quality that is rarely seen in the world of HiFi.

Precision Engineering

​All of the new arms are manufactured in a state of the art machining facility located in Austria. We don't use parts manufactured by any other company for our new arms; every single piece is custom designed and manufactured by us and for us. This was the only way we could guarantee to get the results we were aiming for. Many people thought we were crazy to contemplate such an undertaking, especially considering the relatively modest prices we wanted to offer the new arms for, but such things have never worried us in the past, so why should they now! It took us over a year of painstaking prototyping, testing, redesigning and re-prototyping to finalise the design... and the results truly astonishing.

Tapered Armtube

​The new arms all share the same construction, based around an armtube that is machined from a single billet of high-grade aluminium. It is tapered both internally and externally, which reduces overall mass and also increases stiffness. Drive System

• High mass torque without any of the usual 'high mass platter' energy storage problems.
• Very light, highly inert platter made from Lexan, which has virtually no reflective properties nor any resonance storage problems.
• Rubber belt driving the platter around its outside rim.
• Three immensely powerful motors, whose speed is “locked” together by the master control unit’s digitally synthesised frequency.

This combination provides a platform with levels of stability and torque which high mass turntables can only dream of! When the high mass stored in the motors provides torque to drive the light, inert platter, the energy is focused as rotation, nothing else, and the best of both worlds is achieved.

​Suspension System

Three point suspended design, centred at the bearing, which is also the epicentre of the motors’ inertia. This completely removes the most common problem in suspended turntables, where the motors and suspension are misaligned in relation to each other and as a result, the platter is vacillating constantly between the centre of the drive system and the centre of the suspension.

The sub chassis is designed with 3 arms. One has the tonearm in the standard position on the far right, the other two hold mass balancing weights, which provide an exact equivalent of the combined arm / cartridge mass, thus loading each suspension tower equally.​

Tonearm Choice

The TT-Three is supplied with the arm board cut for our own '/II' 9" tonearms. This is the only way we supply the TT-Three, and we do not offer any other arm boards to fit the inferior offerings from other manufacturers. Our tonearms are the perfect choice for the TT-Three, so why use anything else?!

Power Supply

The different versions of the TT Three differentiate themselves by using different power supply units to drive and synchronise the three motors. As we use AC motors exclusively, the PSU regenerate the wall power to AC of suitable frequency for the different speeds. Next all motors are synchronised in an extremely sophisticated way. How the motors are power and synchronised differs per PSU type.

The original PSU for the TT Three is the PSU3. Due to its costs we decided to introduce two less expensive and one even more advanced and sophisticated version.

The power supply 1 offers an excellent level of musical engagement without compromise of the component quality. 0.5W Tantalum Resistors and Audio Note Electrolytic capacitors are used throughout. The special CODE, analogue modules and output stages are all coded, modelled and designed in-house.

The power supply 2 features improved local power supply regulation for the signal generator, improvements to the clock line and the output stage offering great improvements in refinement, tonal density, palette and definition over the power supply 1.

The power supply 3 is a unique product in every respect, achieving the best sonic results. A superior level of control is achieved by using a specifically designed analogue computer, unique analogue oscillators and fully discrete component design, from start to finish. The discrete component output stage offers far more freedom to achieve a perfect balance both electronically and sonically achieving optimal damping and energy transfer.

The power supply 4 is in essence the same PSU as included with our TT Three reference turntable.

​All of our cables can be ordered in a variety of lengths and termination options to suit your personal requirements.

Being of litz construction, our interconnects have a higher capacitance than some. This is not an issue in most circumstances, however, between the high impedance secondary of our moving coil transformers (100k Ohm) and the pre-amplifier input, the cable needs to have high transfer ability but with low capacitance. The same is true between CD-Transport and DA-Converter.

So over the past few years we have worked on a low capacitance addition to our cable range. Dubbed 'Pallas II' which replace the original Pallas cables, and now uses a proprietary geometry to provide ultra low capacitance with even better sonic performance.

As it is incredibly time consuming to manufacture and completely hand constructed, availability is somewhat limited! As such their price is also such that we qualified all Pallas cables as Level 5 cables.

We source all of the Silver used in our cables from a single source, helping to ensure a consistent level of quality and purity. We have to buy large quantities in bulk, meaning that we usually hold what is by far the largest quantity of Silver Bullion in the Audio Industry! All of this Silver is custom drawn to our specific gauge requirements, then coated in a variety of dielectric polymer depending on the application the particular cable is design for. It is then transported to the cable production facility where it is transformed into our extensive range of wires and cables. All for us, and no one else.

AN-SOOTTO LX is a twisted hex, true Litz, high purity Silver design. It is supplied in single conductor form, so two pieces will be required for each single wired 'speaker, and four would be required for each bi-wired 'speaker.

The CD 2.1x/II uses an in-house modified Philips L1210 dedicated Red Book CD mechanism and a simple yet revealing DAC based around the Philips 1543 16 bit multi-bit digital to analogue converter chip. The analogue output stage is equipped with the quite exceptional 6111WA miniature triode and our own in house designed and manufactured Audio Note (UK) copper foil capacitors.

This player, like its bigger brothers, features no oversampling and no digital filtering, making for a highly effective sonic combination all housed in a small and robust chassis.

Its shares many of the elements found in two of our most highly regarded Digital playback devices, the CDT Two/II and the DAC2.1x. However, the component quality contained within its solid and purposeful chassis exceeds that of either machine. Our own custom Audio Note (UK) resistors and electrolytic capacitors are used extensively, in all critical positions.

The Digital section features the highly regarded Analogue Devices AD1865 digital to analogue converter chip, the same device that we use in our highest level stand alone DACs. This 18bit device has consistently outperformed every competing chip we have tested regardless of specification or price.
The analogue output stage is based around two ECC88 dual triode valves, and the output capacitors are our own Audio Note (UK) copper foil variety.

Level Three Red Book CD Player. The CD5.1x is a completely new machine which elevates the one-box CD player to hitherto unknown levels of performance. Never before has it been possible to achieve such quite astonishingly superior levels of digital replay from a single chassis, integrated design.

Materials and component quality

The CD5.1x features the top-loading Philips CD Pro 2LF CD mechanism, which we custom modify and improve in-house, bringing the performance of this already excellent mechanism up to a standard that is truly in a class of its own.

The power supply is a valve rectified and regulated design, using a 6X5 and ECL82.

The analogue output stage uses a combination of 1 x 5814a and 1 x 5687WB valves, feeding a pair of our world-renowned output transformers, using SHiB cores with copper primaries and secondaries. A mix of our own 0.5 Watt and 1 Watt non- magnetic Tantalum resistors are used in all critical areas, as are our own custom Audio Note (UK) foil / Mylar and electrolytic capacitors.

The CD5.1x uses our own in-house designed and manufactured digital transformers; silver wound for the Transport side and copper wound for the DAC side.

The analogue output has provisions for both unbalanced and balanced operation, using the best available quality RCA and XLR connectors.

The Audio Note DAC5 are the most unique digital product available today. It uses the most unusual and innovative digital circuit on the market, combined with some of the finest components, materials and power supplies possible. Extensive research into the fundamental properties of the data stream itself have shown beyond doubt that, regardless of the theoretical advantages of the signal manipulation employed in our competitors products, such as higher over sampling, noise shaping, re-clocking or jitter reduction, these corrective measures greatly interfere with the critical time domain requirements of the signal.

The filter-interface coils / transformers are of the highest possible quality, using 80% nickel Super mu-metal cores with 99.99% pure Audio Note™ silver wires. The air gaps in the two filter coils per channel are matched across the full frequency range to within 0.1dB of each other, using a specially designed program to supplement an Audio Precision System 2 test rig.

It is capable of driving a wide variety of 'speakers thanks to its exceptional double C-core output transformers, which are custom designed and manufactured by Audio Note (UK).

Cobra is equipped with three analogue stereo inputs, and an additional three digital inputs, via the onboard DAC. The digital coax inputs can accept signals up to 24-bit/176.4kHz (native bit-depth for the Philips TDA1543 D/A converter chip is 16bit, so anything above this is truncated down). If the lenses in a microscope are not correctly chosen and adjusted, the image becomes blurred,  and detail and information is lost. The same is true for an amplifier circuit; if each stage is not absolutely correctly chosen and matched to work optimally with the rest of the amplifier, the result will be blurred, unfocused, uneven sound lacking in information.

So to create a better amplifier, the natural idea was to simplify the circuit and optimise every element, so the combination works seamlessly and harmoniously together. This is exactly what we have done with the MEISHU Tonmeister.

The new PSU uses only one mains transformer, one 5U4 rectifier valve and one choke. When this arrangement is optimised, it works extremely well, producing a very homogeneous and ‘complete’ sound.

The input and driver stage is very similar to that found in the JINRO, TOMEI and ONGAKU, with a 12AU7 and 5687 driving an in-house designed and manufactured inter-stage transformer for the best energy transfer, evenness and authority. This is the most important, fundamental upgrade over the original design.

The output transformers for the new MEISHU were designed specifically for the project by Andy Grove, and it is not an overstatement to say that they are superb.

The circuit is now a beautiful example of elegant simplification, something that could only be realised thanks to our ability to create extremely closely matched transformers in-house, and having our own supply of custom resistors, in-house made foil capacitors and custom made electrolytic capacitors. These allow us to exert extremely tight control over the performance and voicing of the complete amplifier from input to output, something that is simply beyond the possibilities of manufacturers who have to rely on 'off the shelf' components.

The result is an amplifier that maintains the legendary Audio Note musicality, midrange magic and glorious tonal colour of the original MEISHU, whilst bringing new and previously unheard levels of information retrieval and dynamic expression, redefining what is usually expected of a 300B SET amplifier.

If the lenses in a microscope are not correctly chosen and adjusted, the image becomes blurred,  and detail and information is lost. The same is true for an amplifier circuit; if each stage is not absolutely correctly chosen and matched to work optimally with the rest of the amplifier, the result will be blurred, unfocused, uneven sound lacking in information.

So to create a better amplifier, the natural idea was to simplify the circuit and optimise every element, so the combination works seamlessly and harmoniously together. This is exactly what we have done with the MEISHU Tonmeister.

The new PSU uses only one mains transformer, one 5U4 rectifier valve and one choke. When this arrangement is optimised, it works extremely well, producing a very homogeneous and ‘complete’ sound.

The input and driver stage is very similar to that found in the JINRO, TOMEI and ONGAKU, with a 12AU7 and 5687 driving an in-house designed and manufactured inter-stage transformer for the best energy transfer, evenness and authority. This is the most important, fundamental upgrade over the original design.

The output transformers for the new MEISHU were designed specifically for the project by Andy Grove, and it is not an overstatement to say that they are superb.

The circuit is now a beautiful example of elegant simplification, something that could only be realised thanks to our ability to create extremely closely matched transformers in-house, and having our own supply of custom resistors, in-house made foil capacitors and custom made electrolytic capacitors. These allow us to exert extremely tight control over the performance and voicing of the complete amplifier from input to output, something that is simply beyond the possibilities of manufacturers who have to rely on 'off the shelf' components.

The result is an amplifier that maintains the legendary Audio Note musicality, midrange magic and glorious tonal colour of the original MEISHU, whilst bringing new and previously unheard levels of information retrieval and dynamic expression, redefining what is usually expected of a 300B SET amplifier.

Phono Models come with a build in ultra quality tube MM phono-stage with a dedicated power supply, so it is certainly not an afterthought!

• Each P4 Balanced Tonmeister amplifier is equipped with input and output transformers that are unparalleled in design, quality and performance at this price point in the field of Audio reproduction.
• The balanced / XLR input transformers are hand wound by Audio Note (UK), and feature a copper primary and secondary. The core material is of the highest quality, to offer the finest possible signal path from your preamplifier.
• The output transformers are similarly specified, with a copper primary and secondary. The cores are our own Double C design and are manufactured from our own SHiB material. As would be expected, they are custom designed and manufactured by us, in house in the U.K.

This topology reduces the number of passive parts in the signal path to just two resistors.

Designing the circuit was relatively easy on paper. However when we came to building a prototype we discovered why such nothing like it had been implemented before, and it was more than half a decade before we could bring the new Gaku-On to fruition.

Audio NoteTM  is unique in our facility to design, model, prototype and wind our own transformers in house, yet in spite of this it took even us six years to research and develop the necessary materials know how to achieve a musically transparent magnetic coupling from input to output in such a simple circuit.

Each transformer has to be complimentary in every aspect of behaviour to the one next in line.
