The shortest signal path is generally the best, this is the professed aim of almost all the manufacturers of high quality amplification in the audio industry.
However, when it comes to executing this ideal, most of the rest of the industry has been wilfully forgetting this truth and has become addicted to complexity and technology as marketing statements, in stark contrast to this Audio NoteTM has continued to focus on studying and refining our understanding of how to achieve the above goal in order to create products that deliver better and more realistic music, lasting value and overall quality.
Unsurprisingly, the more we explore, the more it becomes obvious that simplicity – and in particular keeping passive components completely out of the signal path or at least to an absolute minimum – is desirable for better and more faithful music reproduction.
Our ideas eventually led to a decision to develop a better sounding power amplifier circuit, a potential successor to the original parallel single-ended 211 based Gaku-On. In pursuit of ultimate simplicity, we decided that it would comprise just two active stages and three transformers; one on the input, one as a driver and one on the output. This topology reduces the number of passive parts in the signal path to just two resistors.
Designing the circuit was relatively easy on paper. However when we came to building a prototype we discovered why such nothing like it had been implemented before, and it was more than half a decade before we could bring the new Gaku-On to fruition.
Our finding was that such a simple amplification circuit demands a degree of transformer quality never seen before in professional or domestic audio. Audio NoteTM is unique in our facility to design, model, prototype and wind our own transformers in house, yet in spite of this it took even us six years to research and develop the necessary materials know how to achieve a musically transparent magnetic coupling from input to output in such a simple circuit.
Each transformer has to be complimentary in every aspect of behaviour to the one next in line. It must not impose any bandwidth, phase, linearity or low level abnormalities which can be amplified by the following stage or stages. It was no small task getting to a point where each transformer was as invisible as the next, despite differences in core size, design and passing signal level. To read more about the art and science of transformer design, click here.
In order to beat this we will continue to research and develop our understanding, and until we find the necessary solutions to further improve the materials, simply put, we believe nothing will come along that beats it.
Everything we learned in the process of developing our best amplifiers, we have applied subsequently to a new and partnering family of balanced, transformer coupled monoblock amplifiers.

M2
It is well known that the accurate reproduction of music, not just sound, requires the purity of the incoming signal to be preserved. It is therefore not difficult to conclude that, in order to achieve this goal and to retain the musicality of the original performance, the complexity of the circuitry itself must be kept to a minimum. In response to this, the M2 Pre Amplifier uses a single-ended, zero feedback circuit topology. This is simply the most linear design possible, demanding pure Class A valve operation and removing the need for a phase splitter, which introduces unnecessary crossover distortion.
In contrast to the majority of the audio industry, we design our circuits with the aim of minimising non-harmonic and time base anomalies, rather than producing vanishingly small harmonic or low intermodulation distortion measurements. These non-harmonic amplitude and time base distortions have a highly perceptible and adverse affect on the signal waveform, and it is far more important to address these factors than participate in the increasingly irrelevant numbers game that chases „perfect measured response‟.
As a result, the M2 was designed for maximum linearity and minimum transient distortion, and avoids the need for detrimental „corrective‟ measures, such as inherently error-prone feedback loops.

It is therefore not difficult to conclude that, in order to achieve this goal and to retain the musicality of the original performance, the complexity of the circuitry itself must be kept to a minimum.
In response to this, the M8 Pre Amplifier uses a single-ended, zero feedback circuit topology.
As a result, the M8 was designed for maximum linearity and minimum transient distortion, and avoids the need for detrimental „corrective‟ measures, such as inherently error-prone feedback loops.
Rather than using separate controls for volume and balance, the M8 is equipped with a dedicated Audio Note (UK) stepped attenuator for each channel. This not only brings the enormous improvements in sound quality expected from the now legendary Audio Note (UK) stepped attenuators, but also provides a level of channel balance accuracy that is impossible to achieve with conventional volume and balance potentiometers.
It fulfils all Audio Note (UK) Level 5 criteria
- Pure Class A operation
- Zero negative feedback
- Single Ended circuit topology

The phonostage installed in the M9 is without equal or parallel, and uses the finest possible components to produce a sound quality that is truly outstanding.
Unlike the majority of preamplifiers available today, the M9 Phono preamplifier is equipped with a „Stereo / Mono‟ switch, to maximise the performance and enjoyment of the large quantity of high quality mono recordings that are still available.
The M9 features a pair of correctly engineered balanced / XLR inputs for sources with suitable balanced outputs. The AZ-Two Deluxe is a floor standing, rear loaded, folded quasi parabolic horn design with a rear facing mouth.

AZ Two Deluxe
It is very efficient and offers the amplifier an easy ‘load’, making it highly suitable for our range of superior quality, low powered valve amplifiers.
As a company, our main aim is to design and manufacture equipment that provides the maximum sonic performance for the price, and to achieve this we use many unconventional solutions. In our quest to deliver an affordable, compact, high sensitivity, wide frequency response loudspeaker to suit ‘real world’ rooms, we re-investigated and re-evaluated the main principles of rear loaded horn cabinet design. This research, coupled with our expertise in driver, cabinet and crossover development, has resulted in a loudspeaker that not only redefines the quality / price relationship, but more importantly offers an emotionally engaging performance that is quite in a class of its own.
If you examine the vast majority of conventional loudspeaker designs, you will discover that they have very poor acoustic impedance characteristics, resulting in low efficiency. In contrast, a correctly designed horn loaded system allows the acoustic impedance to be optimised for the driver across several octaves, resulting in higher efficiency and better dynamic power transfer from the amplifier.
However, horn designs are not without their challenges, and one of the greatest problems is physical size. For a simple horn the lower cut-off frequency is directly proportional to the effective diameter of the mouth; a cut-off frequency at - 3dB of 50Hz, would require a horn with a mouth area of 3.8 square meters.
Clearly unsuitable for most domestic purposes!
So, we had to find a method of reducing the size requirement whilst maintaining the low frequency response. By re-configuring the size and shape of the rear horn flare, the (increasingly capacitive) throat impedance is off-set to a point below the cut-off frequency. This, combined with positioning the loudspeaker in close proximity to a corner further reduces the radiation impedance, and effectively increases the bass horn moth area by a factor of around x16 (x8 when placed against a rear wall), which provides a substantial boost at low frequencies.
As with all Audio Note (UK) loudspeakers, no corners have been cut in terms of component and driver quality despite the modest price of the AZ-Two Deluxe. Both the bass driver and tweeter are high quality units (the bass unit being the same as that found in the more affordable AN-J and AN-E; the tweeter is the same as is used in our AN-K models), and are combined with a heavy-duty crossover featuring air core inductors, Audio Note (UK) silver plated speaker terminals and Audio Note (UK) AN-D internal wiring.

CD Zero
Level Zero Red Book CD Player. Our most cost-effective Red Book CD playback system for the discerning music lover. For those looking for the best possible sound quality in a single, small but perfectly formed package, there is no superior choice than the CD Zero.
While the rest of the audiophile world continues its delusional and ultimately doomed love affair with the currently fashionable crop of what are claimed to be ‘high-resolution’ computer sources, we at Audio Note (UK) continue to extract even greater degrees of information and quality from Red Book CD, which is still the best currently available digital music format.
Audio Note (UK) is highly critical of the digital medium as presented by the compact disc; we sincerely hope that you too will find this transport breaks free from the ‘digital mould’ that we are all so accustomed to, and so opens a new window on your CD collection.
It has been specifically engineered for sonic performance rather than technical specifications and fulfills all Audio Note (UK) Entry-Level criteria.
Materials and Component Quality
Housed inside its deceptively solid casework are simplified and integrated versions of our Zero-level dedicated Transport and DAC (CDT Zero/II and DAC0.1x).
The in-house custom-modified Philips front-loading CD mechanism is designed purely to read true Red Book CDs, which, in our opinion, is still the best possible digital music format currently available. The Philips TDA1543 DAC is implemented in a non-oversampling digital filterless circuit, and the analogue output stage is equipped with the quite exceptional 6111WA miniature dual triode.

DAC 0.1x
Extensive research into the fundamental properties of the data stream itself has shown beyond doubt that, regardless of the theoretical and measurable advantages of the signal manipulation employed in all currently available digital products, such as higher oversampling, noise shaping, re-clocking, or jitter reduction, the result is this: all these corrective measures greatly interfere with the critical time domain requirements of the signal. Current theory is based on an assumption that music is similar to bookkeeping data, which, of course, it is not.
Music is a time continuum from beginning to end, which, when broken, is irreparably damaged, and no amount of clever manipulation can ever restore it to its original time-frequency-amplitude duration or relationship, regardless of what the theorists may tell you.
Materials and Component Quality
The DAC uses the revolutionary and currently exclusive Audio Note digital technology, dubbed 1x oversampling™ direct from disc™ circuit topology. The technology, in essence, dispenses with all the correction measures inherent in all other D/A converters and presents the digital signal directly to the converter after reformatting. In other words, all products in the Audio Note DAC range have no oversampling, no jitter reduction, no noise shaping, and no re-clocking.
Having removed all the digital filtering that is part of the oversampling, we have also dispensed with all filtering in the analogue domain to further retain good wideband phase-frequency and dynamically coherent behavior. The end result is a reproduction more reminiscent of master tape in quality, with greater differentiation and contrast between different recordings.
The DAC0.1x converter uses a Philips TDA1543 stereo D/A converter chip and features a 6111WA valve zero-feedback output stage.

TT Three
A third man, the host, carefully puts a vinyl on. The stylus descends into the empty space between two tracks. Silence, then subtle crackling and anticipation fill the air. The third man, who only looks relaxed on the outside, turns up the volume on the amplifier. The loudspeakers discreetly emit that typical "vinyl sound." The guests on the sofa are curious which vinyl the third man has chosen, until the drums kick in.
Boom—clap! The bass drum resonates through the furniture, and one of the guests kicks the table, spilling coffee from the cups in a knee-jerk reaction. An audiophile’s state of shock. The third man shouts, “Wow!” But what else would you expect him to shout at such an incredible moment? The “dynamics” are simply mind-blowing, nightclub volume at home.
The TT-Three Series turntables incorporate what we consider to be the ultimate solutions to most of the solvable problems in vinyl replay.

Drive System
- High mass torque without any of the usual 'high mass platter' energy storage problems.
- Very light, highly inert platter made from Lexan, which has virtually no reflective properties nor any resonance storage problems.
- Rubber belt driving the platter around its outside rim.
- Three immensely powerful motors, whose speed is “locked” together by the master control unit’s digitally synthesised frequency.
This combination provides a platform with levels of stability and torque which high mass turntables can only dream of! When the high mass stored in the motors provides torque to drive the light, inert platter, the energy is focused as rotation, nothing else, and the best of both worlds is achieved.
Suspension System
Three point suspended design, centred at the bearing, which is also the epicentre of the motors’ inertia. This completely removes the most common problem in suspended turntables, where the motors and suspension are misaligned in relation to each other and as a result, the platter is vacillating constantly between the centre of the drive system and the centre of the suspension.
The sub chassis is designed with 3 arms. One has the tonearm in the standard position on the far right, the other two hold mass balancing weights, which provide an exact equivalent of the combined arm / cartridge mass, thus loading each suspension tower equally.
Tonearm Choice
The TT-Three is supplied with the arm board cut for our own '/II' 9" tonearms. This is the only way we supply the TT-Three, and we do not offer any other arm boards to fit the inferior offerings from other manufacturers. Our tonearms are the perfect choice for the TT-Three, so why use anything else?!
Power Supply
The different versions of the TT Three differentiate themselves by using different power supply units to drive and synchronise the three motors. As we use AC motors exclusively, the PSU regenerate the wall power to AC of suitable frequency for the different speeds. Next all motors are synchronised in an extremely sophisticated way. How the motors are power and synchronised differs per PSU type.
The original PSU for the TT Three is the PSU3. Due to its costs we decided to introduce two less expensive and one even more advanced and sophisticated version.
The power supply 1 offers an excellent level of musical engagement without compromise of the component quality. 0.5W Tantalum Resistors and Audio Note Electrolytic capacitors are used throughout. The special CODE, analogue modules and output stages are all coded, modelled and designed in-house.
The power supply 2 features improved local power supply regulation for the signal generator, improvements to the clock line and the output stage offering great improvements in refinement, tonal density, palette and definition over the power supply 1.
The power supply 3 is a unique product in every respect, achieving the best sonic results. A superior level of control is achieved by using a specifically designed analogue computer, unique analogue oscillators and fully discrete component design, from start to finish. The discrete component output stage offers far more freedom to achieve a perfect balance both electronically and sonically achieving optimal damping and energy transfer.
The power supply 4 is in essence the same PSU as included with our TT Three reference turntable.

IO-Gold
The IO range of cartridges from Audio Note UK are world-renowned for their stunning quality and their effortless ability to reproduce music to the highest standards. The revolutionary nature of the design runs contrary to most accepted design criteria, now, as they did then. The result is a small range of moving coil cartridges, which are second to none in dynamic range, tonal balance, separation, timbral reproduction, and lack of coloration and surface noise.
All the above make the cartridges relatively costly to acquire and use correctly, but the results are so illustrious and their music-making so fine that Audio Note has never found selling them a problem; generally, they have been very scarce and hard to find. An annual production of about 40 - 50 pieces speaks for itself.
All IO cartridges are hand-built in the UK to exacting standards and feature ALNICO magnets, silver-wound generator coils, and a titanium cantilever with an Audio Note AN Type 1 profile, diamond stylus.
Th IO-Gold incorporates a heavy, gold plated gunmetal body. To use this cartridge on our tone-arms will require our tungsten counterweight. Next to this the IO-Gold uses an extremely polished diamond and an upgraded magnetic generator.
Due to the extremely low output, we do not recommend the use of active moving coil stages for any of the IO cartridges. Active MC stages do not offer the linearity and general noise level necessary to get the best performance from the IO cartridges, this is why we always recommend a correctly specified Step Up Transformer, feeding a Moving Magnet RIAA stage.

PALLAS/II Interconnect
Being of litz construction, our interconnects have a higher capacitance than some. This is not an issue in most circumstances, however, between the high impedance secondary of our moving coil transformers (100k Ohm) and the pre-amplifier input, the cable needs to have high transfer ability but with low capacitance. The same is true between CD-Transport and DA-Converter.
So over the past few years we have worked on a low capacitance addition to our cable range. Dubbed 'Pallas II' which replace the original Pallas cables, and now uses a proprietary geometry to provide ultra low capacitance with even better sonic performance.
As it is incredibly time consuming to manufacture and completely hand constructed, availability is somewhat limited! As such their price is also such that we qualified all Pallas cables as Level 5 cables.

P3 Tonmeister
If the lenses in a microscope are not correctly chosen and adjusted, the image becomes blurred, and detail and information is lost. The same is true for an amplifier circuit; if each stage is not absolutely correctly chosen and matched to work optimally with the rest of the amplifier, the result will be blurred, unfocused, uneven sound lacking in information.
So to create a better amplifier, the natural idea was to simplify the circuit and optimise every element, so the combination works seamlessly and harmoniously together. This is exactly what we have done with the MEISHU Tonmeister.
The new PSU uses only one mains transformer, one 5U4 rectifier valve and one choke. When this arrangement is optimised, it works extremely well, producing a very homogeneous and ‘complete’ sound.
The input and driver stage is very similar to that found in the JINRO, TOMEI and ONGAKU, with a 12AU7 and 5687 driving an in-house designed and manufactured inter-stage transformer for the best energy transfer, evenness and authority. This is the most important, fundamental upgrade over the original design.
The output transformers for the new MEISHU were designed specifically for the project by Andy Grove, and it is not an overstatement to say that they are superb.
The circuit is now a beautiful example of elegant simplification, something that could only be realised thanks to our ability to create extremely closely matched transformers in-house, and having our own supply of custom resistors, in-house made foil capacitors and custom made electrolytic capacitors. These allow us to exert extremely tight control over the performance and voicing of the complete amplifier from input to output, something that is simply beyond the possibilities of manufacturers who have to rely on 'off the shelf' components.
The result is an amplifier that maintains the legendary Audio Note musicality, midrange magic and glorious tonal colour of the original MEISHU, whilst bringing new and previously unheard levels of information retrieval and dynamic expression, redefining what is usually expected of a 300B SET amplifier.

M3
It is well known that the accurate reproduction of music, not just sound, requires the purity of the incoming signal to be preserved. It is therefore not difficult to conclude that, in order to achieve this goal and to retain the musicality of the original performance, the complexity of the circuitry itself must be kept to a minimum.
In response to this, the M3 Pre Amplifier uses a single-ended, zero feedback circuit topology.
As a result, the M3 was designed for maximum linearity and minimum transient distortion, and avoids the need for detrimental „corrective‟ measures, such as inherently error-prone feedback loops.
Rather than using separate controls for volume and balance, the M3 is equipped with a dedicated Audio Note (UK) stepped attenuator for each channel. This not only brings the enormous improvements in sound quality expected from the now legendary Audio Note (UK) stepped attenuators, but also provides a level of channel balance accuracy that is impossible to achieve with conventional volume and balance potentiometers.
